Pretoria - The government has launched an inquiry into allegations that Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and some political leaders, including EFF leader Julius Malema, former DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko and head of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), Joseph Mathunjwa are agents of America’s CIA.

The DA said on Thursday night the statement by the State Security Agency (SSA) was a “bizarre… state-sponsored political hit designed to delegitimise critics of the ruling party and deflect attention away from the crisis in the State Security Agency.”

The statement by Minister of State Security David Mahlobo said; “Government has noted with great concern the allegations of espionage against the Head of the Office of the Public Protector and certain political leaders in our country.

“A search conducted on these allegations made, led government to the following website: africainteligenceleaks.wordpress.com, including other social media platforms.”

The blog Africa Intelligence Leaks alleges that Madonsela, Mazibuko and Mathunjwa are being used by the CIA to undermine the South African government.

“Is Madonsela another CIA project against South Africa or is she a CIA project against the whole African continent?” the blog asks, suggesting she is using her position as executive secretary of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) to gather intelligence for the CIA about other African countries.

About Mazibuko the blog says; “Her entry to the CIA dark world was possible thanks to the support of her political mentor, the Public Protector Thulisiwe N. Madonsela…”

And it says the CIA manipulated Malema and Mathunjwa to provoke the fatal clash between mineworkers and the police at Marikana in 2013 to discredit the ANC government.

“The State Security Agency looked at the matter with great concern, as these allegations will impact negatively on our hard-won democracy and will undermine the independence and credibility of our democratic institutions,” Mahlobo’s statement said.

“The State Security Agency, working with other departments within the security cluster will institute an investigation in order to verify and determine the veracity of the allegations made.

“Furthermore, the State Security Agency working with the entire Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster will continue focusing on its core mandate of ensuring that South Africans are protected, secured and safe.”

On Thursday night DA MP David Maynier, the party’s spokesperson on defence, said that the SSA’s statement was “bizarre.”

“The fact is that ramblings on a blog have been turned into allegations and used as a pretext to launch an investigation which amounts to a state-sponsored political hit designed to delegitimise critics of the ruling party and deflect attention away from the crisis in the State Security Agency(SSA).

“The State Security Agency has clearly become a ‘Stasi’ which is not able to tell the difference between a national security threat and a political threat to President Jacob Zuma.”
