Johannesburg - Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has been dismissed from the federation.

It is understood that 31 members of the federation’s central executive committee voted in favour of his expulsion, against one who was opposed.

While the numbers could not be confirmed, his dismissal was confirmed by three senior unionists.

Cosatu held a special CEC today to decide on Vavi’s fate.

It is understood that the federation first consulted its lawyers before it was decided to show him the door.

Vavi’s expulsion comes as no surprise. Many of the Cosatu’s affiliates issued statement earlier in the day indicating that they were fed up with him.

This follows him defying Cosatu processes by no longer participating leadership meetings, and instead announcing on Sunday he will go to ground to build the support of workers.
