Johannesburg - Labour federation Cosatu has vowed to continue defying the e-toll user-pay model on Gauteng highways.

During a post central executive committee (CEC) meeting press conference, the federation’s leaders came hard on government insisting on an alternative transport system for all South Africans, especially the workers.

The CEC discussed the announced improved conditions to the e-toll system.

“We are going to defy in even paying the tariffs that have been reduced because it does not address the challenge that we have of not having an alternative transport system,” said Cosatu 2nd vice president, Zingiswa Losi.

The federation has also vowed to take to the streets in protest once more as they feel that there was still an opportunity to reverse the user-pay model. They also warned the prices would not remain low forever.

Cosatu acting general secretary, Bheki Ntshalintshali said the improved version of the system was like a “sugarcoated pill” that the public was made to swallow. The federation also decided during its CEC on various issues including the date of its ordinary national congress which will be held at the end of November.

This would precede the special national congress on July 13-14, to which expelled affiliate, Metalworkers Union (Numsa) will not be able to appeal its dismissal as that can only be done at the ordinary congress.
