Johannesburg - The Cosatu Gauteng congress kicked off in Joburg on Tuesday morning with about 1360 delegates set to elect leaders and prepare for the federation’s ordinary congress in November.

But while Gauteng had previously been supportive of expelled-general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, and expelled metalworkers union, Numsa, Cosatu president S’dumo Dlamini has dismissed the possibility of these issues being discussed at this week’s meeting.

Dlamini told journalists that last month’s special national congress had decided that the Vavi and Numsa issues could only be deliberated on at the ordinary congress and that this would be binding on Gauteng’s congress.

He also dismissed “analysis” of Vavi being popular in the province.

But dissident members of Cosatu-unions told Independent they planned to raise the issues on Wednesday.
