Johannesburg - The coalition between the EFF and the DA is due to their animosity towards the ANC, the ruling party's secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Monday.

“The emergence of a rightwing coalition among political parties is one of convenience and is brought together only by their common animosity towards the ANC,” Mantashe told reporters in Johannesburg.

“Their only intention is to derail the revolution, and therefore qualifies to be called a counter-revolutionary coalition.”

Mantashe was briefing media on the African National Congress's national executive committee meeting over the weekend.

He said the NEC had noted how Parliament had descended into chaos with parties launching an unruly offensive against the ANC.

He said opposition parties were hiding hooliganism behind robust engagement.

He gave an example of Economic Freedom Fighters' Chief Whip Floyd Shivambu showing Deputy President Cyril Ramaphos the middle finger.

“Hooliganism and insult are at unprecedented levels and are unfortunately being defined as a tool of engagement. The decorum and dignity of Parliament as an institution is being dragged through the mud under the cover of the right to be robust,” Mantashe said.
