A quiet town has been rocked by a porn scandal allegedly involving a Democratic Alliance councillor.

The Daily Voice learnt last night that a charge of possession of pornographic material is being investigated by police after the matter was reported to them by the African National Congress yesterday.

In a statement, the ANC says the porn was found on the Swellendam councillor’s office computer by IT experts in November last year.

“The material is alleged to be of an explicit, hard and kinky [style of] pornography,” explains Songezo Mjongile, the ANC’s Western Cape provincial secretary.

“The ANC is shocked by the allegations that the DA council member used the municipality’s computer during office hours to look at pornographic material.”

Mjongile accuses the DA of trying to cover up the scandal.

He says his party informed senior DA officials, the mayor, speaker and municipal manager about the alleged misconduct but nothing was done.

“No steps were taken. Instead the DA has tried to sweep the sex scandal under the carpet,” says Mjongile.

“And that is why the ANC reported the matter to the council and Swellendam police so that the complaint can be investigated.”

According to Mjongile, the possession of such material is illegal.

And he says it is illegal to use municipal equipment to carry out the alleged deeds.

The Swellendam police have confirmed to the Daily Voice that a charge has been laid.

Police say the charges will be investigated and referred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions who will then decide wether to pursue a case or not.

Anton Bredell, MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, confirmed to the Daily Voice last night that the allegations were brought to his attention last Thursday.

“I contacted the mayor and municipal manager and requested an investigation,” says Bredell.

“We view the matter as very serious, but no one is guilty until they are proven guilty of an offence.

“If this is just a plot by the ANC to destroy a DA member’s life, then we will stand by him.

“If he is guilty, we will not hesitate to take action.”
