Cape Town - DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane on Sunday said political pressure was behind acting Hawks boss Mthandazo Ntlemeza’s revelation that there was no criminal investigation into security upgrades overspending at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home.

Maimane said the acting Hawks boss’s statement came a year after he had laid eight charges of corruption against Zuma “for his complicity in the misappropriation of public funds to upgrade his personal residence at Nkandla (CAS 123/03/2014)” under the 2004 Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.

“Mr Ntlemeza’s statement makes it clear that any investigations the Hawks were conducting have been dropped as a result of political pressure in the wake of the unlawful suspension of Hawks boss Anwa Dramat,” said Maimane in reference to Sunday’s City Press interview with the acting Hawks head.

Maimane laid the charges at the Nkandla Police Station, as the EFF laid similar charges in Gauteng. Late last year police confirmed they were investigating and had correlated all dockets under the national investigating unit.

In a parliamentary reply to an October 2014 question on an investigations update, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said he could not respond as the matter was sub judice.

“The investigation in this regard has been initiated and no further information can be disclosed at this juncture as the matter is still sub judice. Suffice to say all processes have been followed,” stated Nhleko’s parliamentary written reply.

Maimane on Sunday said he would submit further parliamentary questions to the ministers of police and justice “for clarity” on this matter.
