De Lille new DA provincial leader

Cape Town - Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille is the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape.

The announcement was made in Goodwood, Cape Town, at the DA provincial congress.

Close to a thousand delegates participated in the vote for the position of provincial leader, and the rest of the DA executive in the province.

“Your new leader is Patricia de Lille,” announced DA MP Anchen Dreyer as Tina Turner’s “You’re Simply The Best” blared from speakers set up at the venue.

De Lille beat her only competitor, advocate Lennit Max, a former Western Cape police commissioner and DA MP.

Western Cape human settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela is De Lille's deputy after pipping incumbent Theuns Botha to the post.

Local government MEC Anton Bredell was elected unopposed to the position of provincial chairman.

Bredell's deputies are City of Cape Town councillor Grant Twigg, Bitou municipality mayor Memory Booysen and social development MEC Albert Fritz.

Andricus van der Westhuizen retained his position as provincial chairperson of finance.

Community safety MEC Dan Plato, Cape Town mayoral member for safety and security JP Smith, Swartland municipality mayor Tijmen van Essen, and Theewaterskloof municipality Speaker Christelle Vosloo were elected as additional members of the DA provincial executive.
