Durban -

The ANC women’s league in KZN has endorsed Bathabile Dlamini as its preferred candidate to lead the league nationally.

Weziwe Thusi, acting secretary in KZN, which has the highest number of voting delegates, said Dlamini to could take the crisis-riddled league to greater heights.

She described Dlamini, who is the minister of social development, as a credible cadre who inspired confidence.

“Comrade Dlamini is a mature and dedicated individual capable of taking the women’s league forward,” she said.

Thusi lauded incumbent president Angie Motshekga, minister of basic education, for her contribution to the league.

However, she believes it is time for Motshekga to hand over the reins.

“We believe she has done her job quite well, but it’s time for her to make way for a new leader,” she said.

According to Thusi, 87 branches voted in KZN in favour of Dlamini during the provincial general council last week.

The women’s league has been marred over recent years by problems which have led to a string of postponements of what the constitution of the ANC requires - a women’s league elective conference every five years.

But because of internal division the last one met in 2008.
