Parliament - EFF MPs held up Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s question-and-answer session in the National Council of Provinces on Wednesday, complaining bitterly about the forced removal of one of its members from the chamber last week.
The EFF MPs wanted an assurance from deputy NCOP chairman Raseriti Tau that there would not be a repeat of last week’s events which saw one of their delegates, Tebogo Mokwele, forcibly removed by parliamentary security officers after she refused to leave when Tau ordered her to do so last week.
“As a woman, I need to be protected from the officer presiding…I need an assurity that whenever I interact with the deputy president regarding his accountabilty, I won’t be assaulted again…,” Mokwele said.
Tau would not give the assurance, but told Mokwele she would be “protected under the rules”.
Mokwele was the first MP to be booted from a parliamentary chamber since the adoption of new stricter rules to deal with disruptions during House sittings.
