Cape Town - The EFF has won the election battle – on Gumtree.

Its red berets are top sellers.

Of the top five election items on Gumtree, the ANC’s berets are last.

With voters heading to the polls on Wednesday, online traders have used South Africa’s fastest growing online classified website to cash in on election memorabilia and political party accessories.

Gumtree marketing head Claire Cobbledick said the EFF’s red berets, at R100 each, had attracted more than 1 000 orders. Plain red berets are available for R75.

The EFF’s Western Cape leader Nazier Paulsen said the number of sold berets would turn into votes.

“No one wears an EFF beret for jokes. They wear it to show their support for the party. We brought much excitement to the political arena and this will surely turn into votes.

“We are going to make a difference, and on Gumtree, it’s clear it’s going to happen,” he said.

Second-best seller is the original 1994 election ballot papers at R99 each. There are still 45 available.

The first edition of Long Walk to Freedom, a book celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela, is third on the list. A book signed by Madiba is priced at R15 000.

Poster prints of Nelson Mandela speaking at the Cape Town City Hall after his release signed by the photographer Kim Geffen come in at R250.
