Johannesburg - Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa wished South Africans a peaceful holiday season on Wednesday.

“As we celebrate this season, we also celebrate 20 years of peace, freedom and democracy,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.

“It provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come and how much further we need to travel.”

He urged citizens to reach out to senior citizens and extend love, respect and care to them.

“This festive season, let us express our gratitude to them for the immense contribution they have made to building our country and our nation.”

“On behalf of President Jacob Zuma and the government of South Africa, may I extend our best wishes to you all during this festive season.”

The Economic Freedom Fighters said Christmas was the time to celebrate and show love.

“The EFF calls on the revolutionary spirit of love during this Christmas that as we pray, we also pray for our neighbours. As we give gifts, we also give hope to the needy,” the party said in a statement.

National Freedom Party president Zanele kaMagwaza Msibi wished South Africans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

“Christmas is a time of joy and happiness... it is a time of goodwill. People and families unite and enjoy festivities, meals and happiness. People travel long distances to be with their families... may they travel safely,” she said in a statement.
