Johannesburg - Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Monday announced the establishment of a ministerial committee to address problems facing the foster care system.

“The ministerial committee on foster care that we have appointed, and that we are introducing to you today, is an important part of the implementation of the national strategy on foster care,” she said in a statement, prepared for delivery in Pretoria.

“It is established to determine the contributing factors to the challenges experienced within the foster care system and advise the minister, within 18 months, on measures that may be considered to improve the quality of foster care services.”

The committee would consult provincial heads of department and the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) on the status of the foster care programme, and analyse the available psycho-social programmes.

It would provide a report with recommendations and policy options to the minister.

The 24-member committee would be chaired by former deputy minister of social development, Maria Bongi Ntuli.
