Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League’s national task team (NTT) has defended its decision to reinstate the Limpopo youth leadership dissolved by a court order.

In May, the high court in Pretoria ordered that the newly elected ANCYL provincial executive committee (PEC) be dissolved immediately. This followed allegations that the congress that elected the leaders flouted procedures.

But on Sunday the NTT, headed by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, reinstated the same leadership.

On Monday Mthethwa said that the elected PEC remained dissolved, as ordered by the court.

He said the NTT had decided to appoint the provincial task team (PTT) while the court ruling was being appealed.

This has seen all members of the dissolved PEC being reappointed as PTT members.

Mthethwa said there was nothing wrong with the decision to reappoint the same leaders. He argued that courts had no authority to decide on the members of the task team.

“It is absolutely the decision of the youth league,” Mthethwa said.

He said action would be taken against those who took the matter to court without exhausting internal processes.

“Those people will have a case to answer to. If you just go to court, you should expect the organisation to come back to you,” said Mthethwa.

Mthethwa said the youth league had reasserted it support for ANC PEC member Joe Mathebula as provincial treasurer.

The Limpopo ANC is expected to hold a general council meeting to fill the position of treasurer left vacant following the death of Thembi Nwedamutswu.

Mathebula is set to square off with PEC member Danny Msiza for the position.

Msiza’s bid is supported by the ANCYL faction led by Donald Selamolela, who lost the race for the youth league chairmanship earlier this year.
