Johannesburg - Graca Machel, the widow of the late former president Nelson Mandela, was glad that the global icon had chosen to spend the last years of his life with her, the Saturday Citizen reported.

“I will be eternally grateful he chose me to be that shoulder,” she was quoted as saying.

“We looked into each the eyes of each other with love and joy. We walked hand in hand all along our life together, we supported each other, we gave energy to each other to nourish our hearts and our minds, to dedicate ourselves to the causes we had chosen.”

Machel was speaking at the Union Buildings on Friday where veterans commemorated the one-year passing of Mandela.

She said she was grateful that Mandela allowed her to create the space “physically and emotionally, for him finally to embrace his family one by one and love them under one roof where he could experience in his last years being the centre and glue of his family.”
