Rustenburg - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema received a hero's welcome in Marikana on Sunday.

Party supporters dressed in red T-shirts chanted his nickname “Juju, juju!” when he arrived.

Some jumped and punched the air with their fists in excitement.

Malema arrived flanked by North West party leader Alfred Motsi, national convenor Mpho Ramakatse and spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Motsi said EFF received an overwhelming number votes from the Marikana and Wonderkop voting districts.

“This is the home of the EFF. The ANC knows that. We must not give them space to breath,” said the former president of the African National Congress Youth League.

The party was visiting the area to thank people for the votes it received, which placed it third in Parliament, behind the opposition Democratic Alliance.

The governing African National Congress expelled him in 2012 and he went on to form his own party.
