Johannesburg - The late Free State health MEC Fundiswa “Fezi” Ngubentombi was a brave comrade, said the provincial Young Communist League on Monday.

YCL provincial spokesman Fezile Sonkwane hailed her as a dedicated servant, who was hardworking and humble.

“At all times, (she) defended the image and integrity of both the ANC and its government. She worked tirelessly to also defend its principles,” he said.

“The Free State people have been robbed of a caring servant.”

The MEC was killed along with a policeman in a car accident on the N1 outside Bloemfontein on Saturday.

A child - which was related to her - and a VIP protection unit policeman escaped the crash with injuries.

They had been making their way back from a rally and the launch of a day care centre in QwaQwa where President Jacob Zuma was also present.

The former teacher and mother of five was appointed health MEC in February 2011 after she had served as the MEC for public works and rural development from 2009. - Sapa
