Rustenburg – Former North West Agriculture MEC Boitumelo Tshwene has died, the provincial government said on Monday.

“Mr Boitumelo Tshwene belongs to a generation of ANC leaders who served the masses of our people selflessly throughout his tenure as a Member of the Provincial Legislature, Chief Whip of the ANC, Deputy Speaker of the Legislature and as MEC for Agriculture. His incisive contributions will be missed,” said North West premier Supra Mahumapelo.

He said the province appreciated and honoured Tshwene for dedicating his life to the development of his people.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in the North West said it was saddened by the death of Tshwene.

“Comrade Tshwene made an indelible mark as an educator,a trade unionist, human rights activist and an elected public representative. He will forever be remembered for his robust and passionate engagements on issues that were close to his heart, for upholding collectivism and putting unity ahead of personal ambition,” said Paul Sebegoe, provincial chairperson.

Tshwene died on Sunday. The cause of his death was not immediately known.
