Parliament - Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane on Tuesday tabled a notice of motion in the National Assembly asking MPs to censure President Jacob Zuma.

“Rule 111(1)(a) requires the president to appear before the House at least once every term to answer questions from Members of Parliament,” Maimane said in his written notice of motion.

“The president has failed to abide by this rule of his own accord and must therefore now be mandated to do so.”

Maimane wanted Zuma to be ordered to appear before Parliament to answer questions from MPs, and to be sanctioned.

“The time has now come for Parliament to assert its constitutional authority,” said Maimane.

“We can no longer tiptoe around the president and must mandate him to account to Parliament through a resolution of the House.”
