Johannesburg - Raenette Taljaard made an immense contribution to the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC), Parliament's home affairs portfolio committee said on Monday.
“The committee extends its gratitude to Ms Taljaard for the immense contribution she made during her tenure at the IEC, which ensured that the institution continued to deliver credible elections,” committee chairman Lemias Mashile said in a statement.
“The committee is of the view that her input contributed to ensuring that the IEC remains an exemplary institution, in Africa and world-wide, on how to run free and fair elections.”
On Friday, President Jacob Zuma said Taljaard had resigned as an IEC commissioner.
“We thank Ms Taljaard for her dedication and invaluable contribution to strengthening our constitutional democracy through serving in the... electoral commission and Parliament previously, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours,” he said in a statement.
Mashile said the committee had noted Zuma's announcement, and with preparations for the 2016 local government elections already underway, hoped Zuma would urgently begin the process of appointing a commissioner to fill the vacancy.
“The committee extends its best wishes to Ms Taljaard for her future endeavours,” Mashile said.
