Johannesburg - In a move that could see David Makhura pitted against Paul Mashatile, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the province has resolved that whoever is elected ANC chairman must become the premier.

The resolution is aimed at ridding Gauteng of political problems associated with two centres of power.

Former premier Nomvula Mokonyane often had to fight off a rearguard attack, as Mashatile and his group allegedly imposed their preferred candidates in key positions, including MECs, in her administration.

Now, ANC members in Gauteng could be faced with having to choose between current premier Makhura and chairman Mashatile as the man to be the political and administrative head.

“Our (provincial) congress unambiguously resolved on one chair, one premier,” said provincial ANCYL chairman Matome Chiloane on Wednesday.

He was addressing journalists at the 70th anniversary celebration of the ANCYL.

Chiloane was among those in the league’s newly elected leadership who were paraded on Wednesday.

Makhura and Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas are currently the only premiers in ANC-controlled provinces who are not the chairpersons of their respective provincial structures.

“In line with the ANC Polokwane resolution of eradicating two centres of power, young people have resolved that any individual who occupies the position of ANC chairperson must be premier of the province and vice versa,” Chiloane added.

The move could potentially drive a wedge between Makhura and Mashatile, who are seen as close allies and are enjoying a cordial relationship.

The Star reported in June that Makhura would defy attempts to sow divisions between him and Mashatile by not standing against him. Instead, Makhura would opt to stand as Mashatile’s deputy to avoid a leadership tussle.
