Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma’s office said on Monday it had requested information from the Department of Defence regarding reported plans to buy a new presidential jet at a cost of R4 billion.

The Presidency said it had also asked the department to brief the media in this regard “as much as possible without compromising security”.

It addded: “It should also be noted that the aircrafts purchased by the Department of Defence for use by the president and deputy president belong to the state.”

The department announced that it would brief the media at 10am on Tuesday.

According to Sunday reports, the department has ordered Armscor to proceed with the acquisition of a VIP jet to replace Zuma’s current one, the Inkwazi, with one that boasts double the capacity.

The luxury VVIP jet will apparently come fitted with a private bedroom, a bathroom and conference room.

The Democratic Alliance has urged Zuma to intervene and scrap the acquisition process.
