Limpopo - Other underperforming government officials in Limpopo should be recalled along with the four mayors, Nehawu said on Wednesday.

“Our union wants this recall and removal of underperforming people to be escalated to other areas like hospital CEOs, district executive managers, general, and senior general managers that hinder service delivery,” National Education, Health, and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) Limpopo secretary Jacob Adams said in a statement.

The union welcomed the ANC's decision to recall the mayors from office, saying it supported a process to improve service delivery.

“We want to reiterate our position that they (the mayors) have overstayed their welcome and must exit and hand over everything to the provincial administration,” said Jacobs.

“This shake-up and overhaul of the system should also be complemented by the filling of all vacant posts.”

The four mayors, reportedly linked to Economic Freedom Fighters' leader Julius Malema, were recalled from office on Monday.

They were Lawrence Mapoulo of the Capricorn district, Joshua Matlou of the Mopani district, Wendy Matemane of Elias Motsoaledi municipality, and Nkosi Mahlake of the Greater Tubatse local municipality.

The province's ANC secretary Nocks Seabi said it was decided to strengthen performance in municipalities.

Seabi said the decision had nothing to do with them being aligned to Malema and former Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale.

“Whether they are friends or not is not an issue to us. For us strengthening performance is the priority,” he said at the time.

On Tuesday, the Sowetan reported that the mayors were removed because they were apparently helping Malema's EFF.
