Rustenburg – The African National Congress was disappointed in the results of the Rustenburg ward 17 by-election, the party admitted on Thursday.

“The outcome have taught us a lesson that ward 17 in Rustenburg is white-dominated and blacks residing there are only a few labourers. We have, however, resolved to focus more on getting maximum votes in historically white dominated areas,” said North West provincial secretary Dakota Legoete.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained the ward with what Rustenburg constituency leader, Herman Groenewald called remarkable electoral growth.

“The DA made a clean sweep at the polls with an 86,5 percent majority win. The ANC only managed to claim eight percent of the votes and the Vryheidsfront Plus 5,34 percent,” said Groenewald.

“These results are a clear sign that the DA continues to grow in key battleground municipalities and wards ahead of the 2016 elections, and in this round of by-elections, the DA has grown significantly across South Africa. The stage is set for election 2016 where the DA will make significant inroads into the ANC’s support,” he said.

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said 1 320 voters cast their vote at ward 17 and the DA obtained 85,97 percent of the votes. Voter turnout was 14,15 percent.

The ANC retained its seat at ward 13 in the Matlosana local municipality in an uncontested by-election.
