Johannesburg - Expelled Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi said on Wednesday the problems in the trade union federation signalled a national political crisis.

Vavi and seven Cosatu affiliates held a media briefing in Johannesburg following his expulsion by the federation’s central executive committee on Tuesday.

“We are dealing with a political crisis in SA as a whole, this is not only about Cosatu,” he told journalists. This is a tragedy unfolding…the response must be political.”

Vavi was flanked by leadership from SACCAWU, CWU, NUMSA, FAWU ,SASAWU, DENOSA, and SAFPU.

He said the unions would consult its members across the country in upcoming few months.

“We are going to consult our union members to unfold a programme of mass mobilisation of workers to combat and reverse the situation we are facilitation. I shall participate in this mass mobilisation.”

Numsa was expelled from the trade union federation in November last year.
