Durban - An ANC member was arrested after he allegedly shot and wounded two people at the party’s branch meeting in KwaXimba, west of Durban.

A third person was allegedly run over outside the meeting.

The meeting descended into chaos yesterday when unruly and “illegitimate” members apparently demanded to be part of the meeting.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said one person was arrested. “The injured had already left the scene when the police arrived,” he said.

Party sources at the scene said two people were shot and a third person was allegedly run over “intentionally” as a group attempted to disrupt the meeting.

Cancelled

Provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala confirmed the incident, but would not give further details.

He said that the meeting had to be cancelled.

“We would not want to speak about anything because we haven’t received a report,” he said.

The Mercury reported last week that many of the ANC’s branches in the city were struggling to meet and nominate candidates for the December 12 elective conference.

Many of the branch meetings had been ravaged by infighting over preferred candidates. According to ANC rules, 70% of branches had to meet and finalise their nominations and election representatives before last Friday to form a quorum.

The eThekwini mayor, James Nxumalo, and the party’s regional treasurer, Zandile Gumede, have emerged as the top contenders to lead the region.
