Johannesburg - Commissioner Raenette Taljaard has made an invaluable contribution to the electoral commission during her tenure there, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Friday.

Taljaard worked hard to deepen electoral democracy in the country, on the continent and around the world, the IEC said in a statement.

“As a part-time commissioner, Ms Taljaard always prioritised the work of the electoral commission and provided strong leadership, unquestionable integrity and strategic insight,” it said.

“Her impact and input will be sorely missed at all levels of the organisation.”

Earlier President Jacob Zuma announced his acceptance of Taljaard's resignation as IEC commissioner.

“We thank Ms Taljaard for her dedication and invaluable contribution to strengthening our constitutional democracy through serving in the Independent Electoral Commission and Parliament previously and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours,” he said in a statement.

Taljaard, a former Democratic Alliance MP and author, was a part-time commissioner.
