Johannesburg - Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher redefined British politics, the ANC said on Monday.
“Her passing signals the end of a generation of leaders that ruled during a very difficult period characterised by the dynamics of the Cold War,” ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.
Thatcher died of a stroke on Monday morning, at the age of 87.
Expressing sadness at her death, the ANC said her tenure as prime minister redefined British politics and public administration, which greatly impacted upon European politics and governance.
While Thatcher refused to recognise the ANC during apartheid and failed to isolate apartheid after it had been described as a crime against humanity, the ANC acknowledged that she was a strong leader.
“She was one of the strong leaders in Britain and Europe, to an extent that some of her policies dominate discourse in the public service structures of the world,” said Mthembu.
“Long after her passing on, her impact will still be felt and her views 1/8will be 3/8 a subject of discussion. The ANC extends its condolences to her family, her loved ones and the people of Britain. May her soul rest in peace.”
