Parliament - Cabinet announced on Friday it had appointed former Eskom chief executive officer Tshediso Matona to the National Planning Commission (NPC).

Matona, who was unceremoniously suspended from Eskom in March following an announcement of an inquiry into the electricity utility’s troubles, was appointed secretary of the NPC.

He had served less than six months at the helm of Eskom when he was suspended by former board chairman Zola Tsotsi - who later stepped down after unhappiness among board members over his decision.

In May, Eskom announced that Matona and Eskom had “parted ways amicably”, and insisted it in no way meant Matona was guilty of wrongdoing. The power utility refused to divulge the size of the golden handshake Matona was offered.

Earlier on Friday, President Jacob Zuma denied media reports that he had apologised to Matona after the Eskom debacle.

The Mail and Guardian reported that Zuma had had a face-to-face meeting with Matona at the Union Buildings recently, and offered his regrets on the way he was treated at Eskom.

“The President does not run state-owned enterprises. The enterprises report to line function departments. All career incidents of officials and executives in these departments are managed by the Boards and/or the Ministers responsible,” Zuma said.

“The President therefore cannot apologise for the suspension or any unpleasant career incident of any government official or executive.”
