Johannesburg - A Twitter storm raged on Sunday after a memo emerged allegedly stating that the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) would be marching on Friday calling for “hands off the ANC president”.

The alleged memo was issued on October 21, just one day after the ANCWL pledged their support for students for the #FeesMustFall campaign.

Twitter users expressed anger and disbelief after the memo circulated, stating that this march was a betrayal of students by the ANCWL.

@edeni said the ANCWL continues “to be an embarrassment to women”.

“Are they not mothers? Do they not have children who marched for #FeesMustFall? Shame.”

@SAYoungLion tweeted: “Students marched to union building to tell Zuma that #FeesMustFall, now ANCWL are marching to union building saying hands off our president.”

Others felt this march was useless and that there are more pressing issues to consider. @Soaqrare reiterated that it was a pointless march “considering an array of women issues.”

@iThando tweeted: “For all the crimes against woman and children, ANCWL decides to march for their male president... Whilst they lose relevance. #ANCWL”

But some Twitter users saw the lighter side of the situation.

@Caswell_Phasha joked “maybe this march is like a reed dance version of the ANC to show who is most loyal to king Zuma. #ANCWL”.

The ANCWL could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
