Cape Town - The Western Cape MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Anton Bredell on Wednesday welcomed a spate of clean audits for local municipalities.

Bredell, in a statement on Wednesday, said the province “had been awarded 18 clean audits in the period. This includes the City of Cape Town.”

The Auditor-General’s report, he said, showed an increase in clean audits from 12 during the 2012/2013 financial year. All municipalities, except for one, were awarded unqualified audits. Kannaland Municipality’s audit was outstanding at the time of the report’s release.

Bredell congratulated local councils and their management teams in achieving this result.

“Six years ago not one municipality in the Western Cape received a clean audit,” he said. “Given the legacies we inherited, there are always areas where improvements are needed, but we believe our municipalities provide their communities with the best services possible within the budgets they receive. It’s a case of getting bang for your buck.”

Efficiently run municipalities, Bredell emphasised, “is key to delivering the services needed to make the province a better place for all who live in it.”

The Western Cape has one metropolitan municipality, five district municipalities and 24 local municipalities that get audited under the Municipal Finance Management Act.
