Durban – The African National Congress’s newly elected chairman Sihle Zikalala is set to be sworn in as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature on Thursday.

Zikalala, who ousted KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu as party chairman will take his seat in the legislature, replacing Super Zuma, who leaves the legislature to work fulltime as party secretary in the province.

“Our movement prides itself for the investment it has done to produce a comrade of Zikalala’s calibre, stature and political astuteness over many years,” said the party’s provincial media liaison officer Mhlabunzima Memela.

“His deployment to the provincial legislature will, undoubtedly, enhance the presence of our movement with quality contribution to the advancement of the course of our people.”

Zikalala was previously the party secretary, but he defeated Mchunu for the top post in a tightly fought election by 780 votes to 675 at the party’s elective conference earlier this year.

Last week about 2 000 ANC members who support Mchunu marched on their party’s provincial headquarters claiming the vote was rigged and demanding fresh polls.

Zuma said on Tuesday that while the party would look at their complaints, the members who protested could face disciplinary action.
