Pretoria - Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille on Wednesday handed out solar power kits to residents of the Chris Hani informal settlement in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

Supporters dressed in blue sang and danced as Zille visited different houses as part of her party's election campaign.

Julia Mosayi expressed her gratitude and vowed to vote for the party.

“I'm very grateful, I will be able to charge my phone. I have lost phones at people's houses. Now I will also have light in my own house,” she said.

Mosayi criticised the African National Congress-led government saying it was neglecting the masses and making empty promises.

“We are tired of empty promises. I'm going to vote for the DA. Whites adhere to laws and rules. We love their style of governance. De Klerk is the one who freed Mandela from prison,” she added, referring to South Africa's last white head of state FW de Klerk.

Certain sections of the area have no electricity or water. Zille told residents that what they had endured was service delivery failure.

“(You) have the failure of the most basic right. There is no water and electricity. Water is the most basic need,” she said.

Zille told residents about the Nkandla controversy and said President Jacob Zuma's chickens lived better at his KwaZulu-Natal homestead than they did.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found Zuma gave the nod to upgrades worth over R200 million at his home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal and that he and his family unduly benefited from them.

These included a swimming pool, cattle kraal, and amphitheatre.

She said residents should not accept the conditions they were living in, called on them to vote for change and to afford their children an opportunity to climb the ladder to a better future.

“If you want to help your children and climb the ladder yourself, vote for the DA. The DA will provide a blue ladder for you,” she said. - Sapa
