Johannesburg - The DA kicked off campaign activities in the Alexandra township in Joburg on Wednesday morning, beginning with a mini-rally outside a women’s hostel.

Opposition leader Helen Zille sang with about a hundred supporters in the area, which has been a secure ANC stronghold, telling them there was a strong possibility the governing party could be pushed below 50 percent in Gauteng.

Gauteng ANC chairman Paul Mashatile comes from the area.

“We can make history right here because in seven days time we can bring the ANC below 50 percent. Do you want a blue government for all the people?” she asked to cheers.

She said the DA was very good in opposition but was “even better” in government.

“All the blue people (DA supporters) must bring blue governments. In the Western Cape they say ‘ons moet dit blou hou’ (we must keep it blue) because blue is true,” Zille said.

“And we want to be the government in Gauteng because we want to grow the economy and create jobs.”

Zille said that where the DA governed, including the Gauteng municipality of Midvaal, unemployment was “much lower” than “where the ANC governs”.

She encouraged Alexandra residents to ask the ANC about the security upgrades to President Jacob Zuma’s private Nkandla home, which cost approximately R246 million, especially those living in the hostel which were “some of the worst (living) conditions”.

“The fight against corruption is also the fight for jobs,” she said.

Earlier Zille sang her theme song of the campaign with supporters, a song by South African musician Zahara.
