Zuma names new members of NPC

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday named Planning Minister Jeff Radebe as the new chairman of the National Planning Commission and academic William Makgoba as his deputy for the next five years.

Zuma also appointed a further 23 commissioners, including economist Miriam Altman, local government consultant Sue Bannister, development economist Temba Dlamini, policing expert Frank Dutton and environmentalist Tasneem Essop.

Also on the new commission, appointed for the next five years, is Khanyisile Thandiwe, the CEO of Business Unity South Africa, labour law expert Lekolota Makua, Elsie Molokwane, the founder of POB Environmental Solutions, energy consultant Jarrad Wright and UCT academic Vivienne Taylor, who lectures in social policy and planning. Felicity Mahlati, another public policy specialist, will serve on the commission as the deputy chair of the panel of experts tasked with developing an integrated urban development framework.

Siphamandla Zondi, a foreign policy expert and director of the Institute for Global Dialogue, is also on the new commission, as is Elias Masilele, the non-executive chairman of DNA Economics and Mohammad Karaan, the dean of the faculty of Agri-Sciences at the University of Stellenbosch.

“We look forward to working with them to take this important process forward of implementing the National Development Plan and also exploring new avenues for socio-economic development in our country.”
