Cape Town - The stalemate in Parliament, over whether President Jacob Zuma would answer questions about paying back part of the money spent on the Nkandla upgrades, ended after more than an hour.

DA Parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane and Freedom Front Plus MP Corne Mulder have on Thursday proposed that Zuma give an indication later in the day on the date he will come back to Parliament to respond to the Nkandla matter.

It was a busy afternoon for Speaker Baleka Mbete as she tried to defuse tensions and rein in opposition MPs, who have been forcing her to commit on the specific date for the next answering session.

Mbete said it would not be fair to give a specific date as the matter did not involve her personally.

“If there is nothing that is going to happen today, this House is not going to degenerate,” said Mbete.

EFF leader Julius Malema said they also did not want to disrupt the proceedings. He said all they wanted was for Parliament to commit to the date for Zuma's appearance to answer questions on Nkandla.
