Cape Town - Recently-elected Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane on Tuesday told supporters in Mitchells Plain that President Jacob Zuma's days were numbered.

“The days of President Zuma's government are very much numbered,” said Maimane. “Zuma's government only pays lip service and they are very good at looking busy but doing nothing”.

Maimane was addressing supporters during the Western Cape leg of his countrywide “Freedom, fairness, and opportunity” tour.

“I want to talk about freedom,” he said.

“In celebrating Africa Day, the African National Congress (ANC) calls for Operation Fiela”.

The controversial Operation Fiela, a joint effort by the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force, the Department of Home Affairs, and local Metro police, “concerning” to Maimane.

“I have my concerns. I think the operation is quite absurd,” he said.

Maimane said effective border control was needed and not the type of “violating” questions security forces asked those assumed to be foreign nationals.

“They ask 'Do you speak Zulu?' as if that is the only way to prove that you are South African,” he said.

Maimane also challenged the ANC on their use of the term “racist”.

“You say black South Africans must only vote for the ANC... It is you that is racist,” said Maimane to much applause from supporters.

Maimane added that the DA would call for specialised drug units at SAPS branches in areas such as Mitchells Plain, Manenberg, and Eldorado Park.

“The DA wants to make it clear that criminals's days are numbered.”

Then, after a walkabout among supporters, Maimane made his way to Parliament in Cape Town to again, “call for President Jacob Zuma's resignation”.
