Impersonators of a security firm pulled off a daring robbery on Wednesday, making off with a large amount of cash from the Absa bank in Lydenberg.

Captain Benjamin Bhembe said the robbers came to the bank dressed in the uniform of the security company. They dropped off a trunk supposedly containing cash, and collected another trunk full of money.

He said the bank staff were not suspicious because the impersonators had company identification cards. They only became suspicious when they opened trunk and found paper instead of money, said Bhembe.

The security company concerned, SBV, knew nothing of the incident but had sent people to Lydenberg to investigate.

According to Gauteng manager Peet Joubert, SBV did service Absa bank, but there was no delivery scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Police were investigating the incident.
