A man was arrested on Thursday night for falsely claiming to have planted a bomb in a pub, and saying he was responsible for one of the Soweto blasts in the early hours of Wednesday .

Gauteng police Director Henriette Bester said the Germiston man, Michael John Smith, could not be linked to the Soweto blasts.

She said Smith had phoned the claims in to the police, who had traced the call. His flat was searched, and no explosives were found.

Bester said reports of an explosive device having been found in the Maxies Pool & Pub were incorrect.

Smith would appear in Germiston Magistrate's Court today, she said. - Sapa
