Johannesburg - The victorious DA Student Organisation (DASO), which won the Student Representatives Council (SRC) elections at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in the Eastern Cape, said the party will win the 2016 local government elections in the area.

The university is situated in the highly contested Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in Port Elizabeth, where the DA had been making inroads, gaining supporters ahead of the 2016 local government elections.

The elections, held on Friday, saw DASO beating African National Congress-aligned SA Student Congress (SASCO) and the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) by clinching 12 out of the 20 SRC seats.

The DA youth leader Yusuf Cassim said the party was growing in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“This victory for the DA on the NMMU campus is indicative of growing youth support for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay. The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay in next year’s (local government) election with the continued support of our young voters,” he said.

“Voters continue to reward DASO with renewed SRC mandates on campuses in South Africa as an acknowledgment of sound delivery. DASO’s commitment to caring for students and their issues has been confirmed by this election result.”

Cassim said the party, led by DA mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay Athol Trollip, would win the 2016 local elections in the area.
