Port Elizabeth - South Africa’s surfing community is rallying around a man who lost everything in the St Francis Bay fire – surfing “godfather” Graham Hynes.
Hynes told Cape Talk: “You just couldn’t stop it, it was like an inferno. They told me you can’t go in… It looks like a war has been on here… ”
Hynes, 83, said he had many irreplaceable possessions, including photographs of his late wife and a collection of memorabilia from his career.
“My most treasured… was a silver star from Mandela, for my services to people who haven’t had a chance.”
A Facebook page to “help Graham Hynes rise from the ashes” was set up on Monday, for“South African surfing’s legendary coach, mentor and elder statesman”.
Surfing SA had set up a bank account to help him get his life back.
