Jeffreys Bay - An inquest was opened after a fisherman suffering seizures died on Thursday after being evacuated off a fishing vessel near St Francis Bay, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
Around 6.30am the NSRI rescue crew responded to a call for help from Vulgaris, a chokka fishing boat, reporting a 42-year-old Jeffreys Bay crewman was suffering continuous seizures, station commander Paul Hurley said in a statement.
When NSRI arrived, the fishing boat crew said the man had stopped breathing and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed on the patient.
The NSRI crew took him to shore, where a doctor and paramedics continued extensive CPR efforts. The man was later declared dead.
The man's body was handed into the care of the police and the forensic pathology services, Hurley said.
