Port Elizabeth – The ANC in the Eastern Cape has sent its condolences to the families and friends of three people who died in a fire at an old age home in Zwide, Port Elizabeth, on Saturday night.

“This morning (Sunday) the ANC EC (Eastern Cape) leadership, while in NMM (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) to do organisational work, woke up with sad news that one building in Ekuphumleni Old Age Home in Zwide caught fire last night,” ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said in a statement.

“It is confirmed that three lives were lost. We would like to convey our message of condolences to the families that lost their loved ones,” he said.

“We commend the rapid response by [the] NMM fire department that saved the section that caught fire, only [a] few rooms were affected. As the leadership, we also commend the community members who woke up, in that rainy weather, to help the elderly; they were the first to arrive in the home.”

The social development department and municipality would work together to help bring normality to the home, Mabuyane said.
