East London - Two pupils who were visiting East London to participate in a quiz have drowned, the Eastern Cape education department said on Monday.

The pupils were from Wodehouse Junior Secondary School in Cofimvaba.

“It is with great sadness that today [Monday]…the Eastern Cape Education department woke up to the miserable news of the passing on of two Cofimvaba Education district learners who drowned last [Sunday] night while attending the 8th provincial Economic and Management Science Quiz (EMS) competition held in East London,” the department said.

"The two pupils, a boy and a girl, were part of a three-member Grade 9 team from this district that was attending EMS.

"A third learner who was also part of this team has been admitted at Frere Hospital for further medical tests.”

The department said the pupils’ parents were informed on Monday.

Teachers and subject advisors, who accompanied the learners to the quiz, have been provided with counselling.
