Johannesburg - Sixteen people, including seven special needs children, a bus driver and a carer, were injured after a school bus and bakkie collided on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Lower Park Road in Parktown on Wednesday morning.

Cynthia Nkabinde, who was selling Homeless Talks on the side of the road when the accident happened, said: “I just heard this loud bang… I got a big fright. I heard all the children in the bus screaming and crying… It was terrible.”

The Casa Do Sol bus had been taking the children to school when the crash happened, the school’s deputy principal, Jenny Drew, said.

Emer-G-Med spokeswoman Danielle Dooley said 16 people had been injured in the crash and taken to hospital.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile, 14 people were injured on Wednesday morning following a six-vehicle collision on the R28 near the Silverstar Casino, west of Joburg, said ER24 paramedics.

Spokesman Russel Meiring said the cause of the accident was unknown.
