Johannesburg - The Freedom Front Plus collected 80 000 signatures on an online petition against e-tolls, the party said on Friday.
“We were quite surprised,” FF Plus MP Anton Alberts told the Gauteng E-Tolls Advisory Panel at the provincial legislature.
The petition had initially collected 120 000 signatures but 40 000 were cut out after auditing as it was found that some people had filled out their names twice.
People of all races had signed the anti-tolls document.
“(The e-tolls) have made people stand together in a unified fashion that we as a country have never seen before,” said Alberts.
Gauteng premier David Makhura established the panel on July 17 to assess the social and economic impact of e-tolls.
The review panel is intended to examine the economic and social impact of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the electronic tolling system set up to fund it.
The panel is expected to present its findings to Makhura at the end of November.
