Johannesburg - For a third weekend this month, Gauteng residents can expect cold weather to hit the province, bringing rain with it.

The South African Weather Service said on Wednesday morning that a cold front moving into the area would bring rain with the possibility of thunder showers.

The colder weather is expected to hit Gauteng by late Thursday evening, moving into Friday and lingering over Saturday.

“A cut-off low-pressure system will cause temperatures to drop into mid to late teens with the weather clearing by Sunday,” said weather forecaster Mbavhalelo Maliage.

A cut-off low is a low-pressure weather system that becomes “cut off”, or severed, from the basic westerly flow circulation and spins off independently.

Cut-off lows usually bring rain and are a common occurrence in South Africa.

“We are expecting rainfall over Friday and Saturday,” she said.

When asked about the amount of rain expected, Maliage said a significant amount would be likely in southern Gauteng, but it was not abnormal.

“It’s only a little more than normal, no warnings have been issued.

“The weather will be warmer moving into Sunday and it should be clear moving into the (next) week,” she added.
