Johannesburg - A convoy of dozens of cars and an ambulance left former president Nelson Mandela's home in Houghton, Johannesburg, in the early hours of Friday morning.

As it drove off, the convoy was joined by cars which had been parked in the street.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula got into the back of one of the departing cars.

President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse Zuma, dressed in a bright purple shirt, made his way from the house to his car, which was parked in a side street.

Spirits remained high as people in groups on the streets sang struggle songs and the national anthem.
