Pretoria - A young boy was wounded when his father’s firearm accidentally discharged in a toilet cubicle at the HuntEx2014 expo.

The incident happened during the final day of the expo in Midrand on Monday when a visitor was in the public toilet with his two young sons. They were in a closed cubicle when a shot was accidentally discharged from the visitor’s firearm, hitting his 8-year-old son.

An organiser of HuntEx2014, Adriaan Woudstra, said paramedics stabilised the child. The family were taken by ambulance to the nearest medical facility.

“Initial feedback from the boy’s father indicates that the child is not in danger and no vital organs were damaged. He is receiving treatment in hospital,” said Woudstra.

He said strict firearm control measures were in force at HuntEx2014.

The police’s Central Firearms Registry was at the expo to ensure the Firearms Control Act was complied with.
