Johannesburg - Eight people were killed when the bakkie they were travelling in rolled on the N3 near the Marlboro onramp, Johannesburg metro police said on Saturday.

“It's a few metres from the Marlboro onramp on the N3, a white bakkie over turned...,” said Superintendent Edna Mamonyane.

The driver was one of the eight men who were killed in the accident.

Around 18 people were in the bakkie when it crashed around 11.15am, she said.

The passengers were treated for their injuries and transported to various hospitals.

“One male was airlifted from the scene,” she said.

It was unclear what caused the accident and a case of culpable homicide would be opened.
